Human Rights Watch Insists US-Russia Engagement Must Address Human Rights Abuses


The Trump administration’s diplomatic engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin should prioritize the release of detained Ukrainian civilians, as well as Russian citizens unjustly imprisoned for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and religion, Human Rights Watch stated today in a letter to US President Donald Trump.


"Any discussions concerning the resolution of the war in Ukraine must include the release of detained civilians and the establishment of mechanisms to ensure justice for war crimes," said Sarah Yager, Washington Director at Human Rights Watch. "Regrettably, there has been no indication thus far that ongoing human rights abuses will form part of the discussions."

  Meanwhile, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute Sheikh Ahmad Gumi for allegedly defending terrorists operating in the North-West region.   Lagos CP Clarifies: No Police Officer May Search Personal Phones on the Road The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has reiterated that no law enforcement officer has the authority to search individuals’ phones on the road. CP Jimoh made this statement on Thursday during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Police–Youth Dialogue Programme, organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development at Alausa, Ikeja.
