St Albans Bishop Dr Alan Smith Accepts the Work of the European Commission on Human Rights

News: 4 April 2025

Dr Alan Smith made some theological reference to the Ten Commandments. According to him “where we find the creation narratives where humankind is created in God’s image. It is about the inherent dignity that belongs to each and every person, not dependent on sex, wealth, education, or any other differentiation.”

He further emphasised that the scriptures does not have the phrase human rights and ECHR. That all laws and Conventions were drafted by human. There are some who dislike the ECHR and have problems with the wider issue of human rights and some are not happy with the way the court has interpreted the underlying legal principles which are enshrined in the convention. But the benefits that it has brought to many people, specifically those marginalised and not given the ability to participate and to engage, surely outweigh the frustrations that people sometimes feel. That he is thankful for the ECHR.
